On May 16, seven Bigs, ten Littles, and four volunteers were brought together for a full day of hiking and environmental education hosted by BBBS. A parent and grandparent also joined the group, with the grandparent documenting the day through professional photography.
The group met at the BBBS building early that morning and enjoyed breakfast provided by Chick-fil-a before traveling to the J.A. Tower Trail. Upon arrival, tour guide Lisa Jansen-Rees of Friends of the Wichita Mountains introduced the group to the area’s history, wildlife, and natural landscapes.
During the hike, Littles completed a nature focused scavenger hunt designed to promote observational skills and environmental awareness. Following the activity, the group enjoyed lunch from Jason’s Deli and continued their learning at the refuge’s Visitor Center, where they explored exhibits and completed a second scavenger activity. BBBS extends its appreciation to Chick-fil-a and Jason’s Deli for generously providing meals that helped make this experience possible.
The outing provided an opportunity for matches to strengthen relationships, build teamwork, and engage in hands-on learning in an outdoor setting.
BBBS has also confirmed plans for a new trail-ride event scheduled for October at a different location, with several Bigs and volunteers already committed to participating. Additional details will be shared as planning progresses.
