Over scoops of ice cream, conversations unfolded in ways that remind us why mentoring matters. One Little Brother quietly shared that his Big couldn’t make it because his mom had experienced a seizure. Another Little Sister beamed as she talked about landing her very first job. For two Littles, the night marked a milestone: their very first outing after transitioning from school-based mentoring to meeting out in the community.
More than 50 Bigs and Littles gathered for our recent Ice Cream Social, and what made the afternoon special was the small, meaningful moments shared in between sweet treats.
In true BBBS fashion, care showed up in simple yet powerful ways. When a Little Sister mentioned she couldn’t have dairy, a board member made a quick trip to the store so that child wouldn’t feel left out. And nearby, another Little Sister opened up about her nerves heading into 7th grade, a reminder that sometimes what matters most is having a trusted adult there to listen and encourage.
These moments may seem small, but they are the foundation of something much bigger, Relationships built on trust, consistency, and care. It’s in these everyday conversations, these shared experiences, that Bigs show up in ways that truly change a child’s life.
