Five Years of Mentorship Strengthens Bond Between Big Sister Tatiana and Little Sister Jazzy
When Tatiana was matched with Little Sister Jazzlyn, known to friends and family as Jazzy, in 2021, neither of them could have known how much their relationship would grow over the next five years.
Their match began virtually during the pandemic, but it soon blossomed into a friendship built on trust, encouragement, and shared experiences. Looking back, Tatiana says one of the most meaningful parts of the relationship has been watching Jazzy grow into her own person.
“I’ve seen her grow into such a beautiful young lady,” Tatiana said. “It’s amazing.”
Over the years, the two have explored Houston through a variety of adventures. From bowling and ice skating to theater performances, immersive art exhibits, horseback riding, and local attractions, Tatiana has intentionally introduced Jazzy to experiences that encourage curiosity and confidence. Many of the outings were first-time experiences for Jazzy, creating opportunities for her to step outside her comfort zone and discover new interests.
As their relationship has evolved, Tatiana has had the privilege of watching Jazzy grow from a young elementary school student into a confident teenager. She describes her Little Sister as kind, adventurous, and always willing to embrace something new. One of her favorite memories has been seeing Jazzy find the courage to join her on stage during youth empowerment events, demonstrating a confidence that has continued to grow year after year.
Beyond the activities and special outings, Tatiana believes the most important part of mentoring is simply showing up. Whether sharing advice, listening without judgment, or celebrating milestones, she hopes Jazzy always knows she has someone in her corner.
“It’s really not about trying to solve their problems,” Tatiana said. “It’s about being a person in their corner, speaking life into them, believing in them, and helping them build confidence.”
Like many mentors, Tatiana entered the relationship hoping to make a difference in a child’s life. What she did not expect was how much the experience would impact her in return.
“I went into this thinking I was going to change her life, but she really changed mine.”
For Tatiana, mentorship is about consistency, encouragement, and helping a young person see what is possible for their future. Through five years of friendship, she and Jazzy have shown how a few hours each month can grow into a relationship that leaves a lasting impact on both a child and a volunteer.
