For Eduardo, becoming a Big Brother felt like a natural fit. As the oldest of four siblings, including two adopted sisters, he had spent much of his life guiding, encouraging, and looking out for others. When he learned about Big Brothers Big Sisters through a service program at medical school in 2022, he saw an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a young person’s life.
That opportunity came in the form of Cody.
When they were matched, Cody was 11 years old. Their first outing was a trip to Topgolf, where Cody was quiet at first but gradually began to open up. Over the last several years, Eduardo has had a front-row seat to one of the most transformative periods in a young person’s life, watching Cody grow from a shy middle schooler into a confident and thoughtful teenager.
“Cody is a sweet person. He’s smart, humble, athletic, and funny,” Eduardo said. “It’s really cool to see him slowly but surely get more mature and learn more about real life.”
The pair spend much of their time together at the YMCA, where they play racquetball, work out, and talk about whatever is happening in Cody’s life. Along the way, Eduardo has attended baseball games, watched band performances, and celebrated milestones both big and small. Those shared experiences have built a relationship rooted in trust, consistency, and genuine connection.
One conversation in particular stands out. For years, Eduardo encouraged Cody to think about his future and explore different career paths. Then one day, Cody shared something more specific than ever before. He was interested in becoming a pilot.
“I got super excited,” Eduardo recalled. “It was the first time I had seen him really excited and passionate about a career and his future.”
Together, they immediately began researching aviation programs and opportunities that could help Cody explore that dream. For Eduardo, it was a powerful reminder of why mentorship matters. Sometimes, it is not about having all the answers. It is about being there long enough to help a young person discover their own.
As Eduardo prepares for his final year of medical school, he remains committed to staying connected with Cody. Their schedules may change, but the relationship they have built continues to grow. Through every conversation, outing, and word of encouragement, Eduardo is helping Cody see what is possible and reminding him that he has someone in his corner every step of the way.
